PUBLIC
BEACHES
The area has many
public beaches to choose from, including the most popular listed below:
South Hutchinson
Island Beach
Facilities include a boardwalk, showers, dressing rooms, picnic tables and
lifeguards at 5 locations throughout the year.
North Beach State
Park and Pepper Park
Facilities include showers, dressing rooms, picnic tables, lifeguards, etc.
There is a small admission charge for automobiles at the State Park
FISHING
Deep-sea
fishing is available from various charter or party boats. Also available are
surf casting along the beach and fresh-water fishing in the St. Lucie River,
"Savannas", area lakes and canals. Two jetties that lead into the ocean (one
capped and lighted) are area favorites. Fishing is also available on the
bridges and fish balconies over the Indian River. Florida's largest
artificial reef is two miles offshore.
BOATING
Six free,
public boat-launching ramps, several yacht basins, and many accessible
waterways, including the Atlantic Ocean, Intra-coastal Waterway, Fort Pierce
Inlet and The St. Lucie River (18 miles south) make boating a popular sport
in St. Lucie County.
WATER SPORTS
Area water
sports include surfing (North Beach), skin diving, spear fishing, water
skiing, jet skiing, snorkeling and ocean bathing.
CRUISES
Glide past the
North Fork riverbanks of the St. Lucie River, thick with lush foliage and
mangrove trees on the Water Lilly River Cruise. From the deck of this 19
passenger covered pontoon boat, you will explore the backwaters of the "Real
Florida". Experience "Bird Island" within the mangroves, a remote nesting
area with a wide variety of native birds, and maybe an occasional alligator.
See Florida's wildlife at its best -- naturally. Located at Rivergate Park
on Midport Road in Port St. Lucie, just 2 blocks north of Port St. Lucie

Ride through one of the
County's most beautiful, untouched eco-systems, the Indian River Lagoon.
Experience the beauty of wild dolphins and many other species of wildlife
that thrive in the Indian River. Hundreds of dolphins have been identified
in the Indian River Lagoon. Ride with no more than six passengers on the
intimate, comfortable Florida Dolphin Watch boat. Tour through Fort Pierce
Inlet State Park and Jack Island Wildlife Preserve. Located

GOLF
In addition to
Port St. Lucies' PGA Village, location of the famous North Course which was
voted "Best Affordable Golf Course in USA" in 1996 by GOLF DIGEST, St. Lucie
County has many 18-hole courses where the public may play including:
Ballantrae Golf & Yacht Club, Fairwinds Golf Course, Gator Trace Golf &
Country Club, Indian Hills Golf & Country Club, Indian Pines Golf Club, and
Savannah Club.
ORGANIZED PUBLIC RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
The Fort
Pierce, Port St. Lucie and St. Lucie County Recreation Boards provide a
well-planned recreation program for both local citizens and tourists
throughout the year. Three community centers (two in Fort Pierce and one in
Port St. Lucie) host numerous organized activities. Recreational facilities
in St. Lucie County include: a civic center auditorium, open-air
amphitheater, 15 ball fields, 22 tennis courts, 10 basketball courts, 7
racquetball courts, 32 shuffleboard courts, 2 public pools, 6 boat ramps, a
youth center in Port St. Lucie and fully-equipped playgrounds. The
"Savannas" has been developed as a fishing, boating, camping, picnicking and
swimming area operated by the Recreation Board. Fort Pierce also has a YMCA
that offers programs for boys and girls as well as adults.
